A large mining corporation in East Africa requested urgent support for a review of its existing Human Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility programme. LPD deployed a team of two consultants to undertake a comprehensive review and audit of all Human Rights and CSR structures in place, and identify areas in need of improvement. Based on the comprehensive report generated by this audit the company was able to revise its engagement strategy and improve relations with host communities significantly.

A comprehensive assessment was undertaken in collaboration with the host government and with several major NGOs, and strategies to avoid adverse human rights impact were designed, enabling the company to operate effectively and without harming local communities and values.

On re-starting its operations in country the radically changed security environment necessitated a total rethink of security strategy. Extensive and wide-ranging surveys were undertaken for all high-risk sites, and supplementary risk mitigation measures identified to permit renewed operations.

The failure of security on a major infrastructure project in North Africa resulted in significant losses, and consequent litigation between parties affected by the incident. Expert witness support from exceptionally knowledgeable and respected advisors to the national courts in the jurisdiction where the dispute was being contested resulted in a positive outcome for the parties not at fault.
